How would one keep their stuff safe in a college dorm?

Like, preventing it from getting stolen?

I'm going to be moving off to college next fall and I want to know how I'll keep my belongings, such as my books, my PS3 and its games, my computer, my HDTV, and all that stuff from getting stolen.

You can't.

If the roommate forgets to lock the door, it's open season on your shit. I was fortunate enough to make it through college without ever getting something stolen.
 
Don't live with roommates. If you must live with people, then make sure you each have separate bedrooms with lockable doors.
 
Back when I was in college, my laptop was stolen by some asshole from the floor above mine. I knew it was him because I saw him with the same model laptop so I discreetly took a look at the serial number which I had memorized. It was mine. I decided not to tell anyone because it would make getting revenge much more difficult. Instead I bought another laptop and continued on with the semester as though nothing had happened.

I put my plan into action the day the asshole was leaving. He had all of his bags packed up and he was ready to go. He was supposed to catch a cab, so I offered him a ride. He accepted.

I now have a rather excellent laptop bag made out of human flesh. While not quite as durable as leather, it's much smoother and looks very classy. I get compliments all the time. I never let anyone look into the bag though, because thats where the guy's face is. I stitched it to the inner liner. I love my laptop bag.

I'm fortunate enough to have a socially awkward, loner roommate who is usually in the room at night and locks the door when he leaves. The dorm rooms here also have a lockable drawer for you to keep small valuables in (check book, drugs, etc).
 
See if your HDTV has a locking port on it, similar to a laptop would have. The PS3 may also have one.

However, crazy stuff will happen in dorms, so don't be reluctant to leave stuff at home. Also, don't listen to these introverts that tell you to live alone, living with a solid roommate will lead to some of the best experiences of your life.
 
It's like prison, you need to establish yourself early so people leave you alone. On your first day there find the biggest, toughest guy in the dorm, accuse him of stealing your stuff and beat the crap out of him. After that you'll be fine.

Of course if you're a wimp you might as well just give away your stuff, it'll save you the trouble of worrying about it.

College provides a laptop lock so I'm fine with that

I'm thinking of bring a small safe.. and about 5 meters of chain to chain down my PS3.

Though the dorms are most likely too small for that.

Not feeling completely secure in your own living space sucks
 
Lived in dorms for 3 years, 1 in the freshman dorms which was basically the shittiest living accommodations one can get outside of prison and never had anything stolen. Usually people will respect your stuff... I'd be more worried about letting a bunch of drunk / otherwise f-ed up people into your room (if you choose to associate yourself with them) as THEY would be the most likely to steal / deface / eat your stuff (my Steelers poster was literally eaten by my roommate's friend on shrooms on night).

Don't worry about it, and just enjoy your time. Also, I wouldn't bring that much expensive stuff to school.
 
Don't leave anything unattended on campus. I can't even tell you how many thefts we get- 'I left my laptop on the table and came back 15 minutes later and it was gone!'
