How would I put the 6800gt stock HSF back on?

I've got the BFG 6800gt with the stock cooler, the one that has the copper-colored plating with two blue fans. I'd like to remove it to clean out the heatsink. I think it attaches to the ram with thermal pads.

Once I put the heatsink back on, would I need to scrape off the existing pads and put new ones on? I know you can't just put previously-used pads back in place.

If I scraped off the pads, could I just use something like arctic alumina instead, or would it then not make contact with the ram chips if I did that?

I guess what I need is a guide showing this step by step.

edit: correction about ram

I think with pads you can just leave em on. With the Thermal Grese on the GPU core you have to clean that off and apply some new stuff.

I think you use a hairdryer and warm up the thermalpad on the HSF... then scratch it off

I did that with my Stock A64 HSF with a plastic card

Thanks all, but I think I was incorrect in referring to 'ramsinks'. I meant the copper plate which goes over the ram chips. If I understand correctly, some after-market coolers like NV Silencer 5 have a problem with the plate not touching the ram. I'm wondering if the same thing will happen if I put the stock HSF back on, unless I use the thermal pads on the plate and make sure they touch the ram. Can anyone clarify this?

Meh, I use a NVSilencer 5 on my 6800gt. I just cleaned all of the old crap off (the ramsinks and gpu) and threw some random ceramic based, 10% silver junk on it. Works great.

As far as I know, all revisions of the NV5 Silencer work with the 6800GT. I had both a 1 and a 3. The 3 only had additions to make it work with the 7800GTX. That being said, you'll need to use the pads for the RAM or the HSF might not make contact with the RAM chips.

That's what I thought, about needing to use the pads with the ram. But if I were to reinstall the original stock HSF, would pads be required for that as well for it to make contact with the ram? Anyone tried this before?
