How would I get involved with the space program?

I don't know if it is even possible, but one thing I would love to do more than anything else is go into space. How would I attempt to become an astronaut? What are the requirements?

you probably have to sleep with a senator.
actually I have no idea, but sleep with senators can get you two things
1) killed
2) sent into space
