How would a system like this game?

I learned that CPU plays a small role in gaming when you have a powerful video card. What do you think of this idea? Buy an emachines T3504, add a gig of ram, add a 7900GTO and a larger power supply. This will only cost around $650. I don't know if this would perform well, but what do you think? Thanks. btw, this system isn't for me.

Whether the CPU plays a small role depends on what the game is doing, although it's true that more and more is being done on the GPU. But I don't think your idea is silly. That setup would probably do ok with most modern games. The 533mhz front side bus is one limitation, that will slow access to memory and the GPU. Combined with a meager cache that could hobble things a fair bit. Remember, however fast the GPU may be, the system still has to feed textures and vertex lists and other stuff to it, and that has to come off the hard disk, and then out of memory. So having a fat pipe to ram is important. Would be interesting to see if any of the master value builders :) here in AT can do better for $650.

A friend of mine did this with a high end emachines and it worked really well, I don't know if it would work with the low end ones though.

AMD 3800 X2: $150
Some kind of Biostar Tforce or used DFI Ultra D: $65
1 GB of value ram: $75
Case+PSU: $50
Drives: $60
7900GTO: $250

Total: $650

At least you can overclock it if you build it yourself.

Edit: Actually, it would kick the **** out of any Celeron system. The Celeron's cache really hurts performance.

Where did you get the pricing of the ram unless it is used, and no quality PSU to run that 7900GTO?

Cache does make a fairly large difference. I am constantly reminded of this when I game on my 2.2GHz Sempron, the FPS are 10-15% below what any 64 3200+ CPU with equal video card would give you.

Unless you've got a "guy" you might want to plan for something other than a 7900GTO. Nobody's got them (that I know of) and they're not going to get anymore.

Nvidia has no more plans for it?

exactly....

The days of building an entry level system that can compete with the the emachines and gateways has long since past. While you can get the hardware to about the same cost, you will always end up over when it comes to the software(mainly the OS).

I?m looking to due the same thing for a friend.

Emachines for about $400 with a gig of ram, and a $150 vid card of some sort

The 7900gs looks really good for the $149 deal going around.

This wasn?t possible in the past since they never included an expansion slot on the low end models, but the last time I look at the models available at CompUSA they all had a PCI express x16 slot available and a sticker on front advertising as much.

Its also nice so that if anything goes wrong they can call Emachines or gateway and not me?

make sure the emachines has a PCIe x16 slot and at least 1 free RAM slot and you should have a decent (midrange) gaming system.

I totally forgot about the 7900GS. It's like the 7800GT, but faster. That was a great gaming card, great thinking.
