How would a civillian get "secret" DOD clearance?

I think they have some sort of priority in how they process clearances. I know everyone on the boats clearances came back in about 6 months.

As I understand it, it's not a priority per se, only a question of resources. If your particular base/facility/etc. has a large number of DSS personnel, then the clearances will be processed faster. The clearances go to different agencies for final determination (adjudication) and that's where the really long delays can appear. Sometimes it comes down to having a thick file sitting on someone's desk, and that investigator doesn't feel like tackling that file. So, you have to wait until that person decides to forego a small file and looks at yours.

what if you have no previous police record?

It all depends. There are numerous factors regarding the granting of a clearance. The bottomline is that if you can take an honest assessment of yourself and see no foreign influences and no financial problems, you should be fine for a clearance. The only way to find out for sure is to apply.

"Top-secret clearance is based on a Special Security Background Investigation. That process can take six months to a year, and investigators can delve back 15 years into an individual's personal background. The top-secret clearance process is expensive, sometimes costing as much as $100,000 for one investigation. People holding this clearance may be required to undergo periodic polygraph examinations."

Dude, you have no idea what you are talking about. The process is way shorter, the waiting list is the long part. They only go back 5 years and if it costs more than 60k than you have too much crap on your record and they deny you the clearance. and there is no polygraph test.

They only went back to when I was 16 (I was 19 when I signed up) and was told by some random DOD agent that the process costs $100k. I never got hooked up to a poly

I'm also interested in applying for a government job that requires Top Secret clearance. I'm curious what kind of stuff exactly they'll dig up. I mean, I don't think I've ever done anything worse than anyone else I know my age (23), but are they looking for absolutely perfect people? I'm basically curious what kinds of things they check for that will deny you Top Secret clearance.

<< a "secret" clearance is worthless nowadays. i have one (inactive). all the jobs now require Ts w/polygraph. uugg..damn terrorists! 🙁

of course if u have a ts/poly, then u can get a 100k+/year job EASILY! and it doesnt matter about your job skill. they'll train u. if the contrractor company doesnt have anyone to fill that slot, they dont make any $. and w/allthe $ bush is throwing around, ALOT of those slots are ts/poly.

hm...joining the reserves for 3 years to guarentee a $100k+/year job...NOT WORTH IT, since they can ship your ass overseas to fight (ie: iraq). getting killed aint worth all the $ in the world.

It would solve all your problems though... almost worth thinking about.

Just develop a new, highly effective weapon. You will be in a top security facility in notime. Not to mention that you can soon after put the death of millions on your resume!

Not perfect...just not dangerous

They will also look into your financials. Mainly to assess the likelihood of accepting bribes.
While they do look at previous drug use, it can be overlooked dependant upon what it was. However, if you've ever seen a shrink for anything quasi serious(aka something more than death in the family or death of a patient if you do rescue work), that will cause some issues.
I believe I have read about private individuals getting security clearance but they have to foot the bill so it was very cost prohibitive. Easily 5 figures.
