I have 3770k running at 4.5 I'm not sure if this cpu would be adequate for running 2 980's so I leave the question to those of you that know more that I do. Any info/suggestions/thoughts are appreciated.

There hasn't been any major speed increases since the 2600k to today. You are good to go. :)

Your within I'd say 5-10% of (i7 4790K / i7 5960X) on most gaming benchmarks. No reason to upgrade at all.

3770K @ 4.5Ghz is perfectly fine. I would get dual 970s over 980s since 980s are hardly faster for nearly 70% more $. Take the $440 saved and upgrade to dual GM200s next year when you need more performance.

for gaming its about as fast as a cpu can get. only an oced 4770k/4790k would be a little faster in a few games. and that is only if you are running at just 1080. at 1440 or above there is likely to never be any difference with graphics cranked.

and as others have mentioned go 970 sli unless money is just not a big deal. and if its not you better have a 2560x1440 or better setup too.

Since I also have the i7-3770K, this makes me smile! :D

Don't need to spend thousands upgrading to: 2011-3, X99, i7-5960x, DDR4, etc. for a while. Unless Black Friday/Cyber Monday wants to have 50% off sales, then maybe I'll consider it. Haha!

I compared stock to stock.
which is silly since the 4790k already comes oced and the OP does not have a stock 3770k anyway. clock for clock there is about 10% difference between the 3770k and 4790k and in realistic gaming cases that will never been seen.

Except I wasn't replying to the op. I was replying to somebody that said today's chips are no faster than a 2600k.

Add the heat of haswell compared to sandy. You could actually even out. Not only will a Sandly likely overclock further than a Haswell, but it'll be cooler at that.

Now I'm not saying a Sandy is going to be faster OC, vs OC. But it's certainly going to be much closer than you are thinking.

Nobody said that.

This was said:

"There hasn't been any major speed increases since the 2600k to today."

Max OC to Max OC a Sandy can hold it's own against a Haswell.

And on topic, OP, the 3770k will do just fine with two 980s.
