top question

how would a 18 to 2.0 clocked Centrino2C fare with the upcoming Vista?

ive read that 64bit is crucial but for a laptop would there be serious slowdowns or is this something only performance gurus would be noticing?

First off, you don't need a 64 bit processor for Vista. Secondly, Centrino is more a marketting term than anything else. I'm assuming you mean the mobile Core 2 Duo aka Merom, which would be just fine for Vista. It's older cousins Yonah and Dothan would also be fine.

Your main concern is the display adapter on the laptop, though if you disable all the eye candy and put it in boring win2k mode, it doesn't matter. Most of the Vista hardware hype is nonsense; all you have to do is disable eye candy and you're fine.

Except it'll still require more CPU cycles and more RAM, regardless of whether Aero is enabled or not.

Vista is a hog. Core Duo is fine, just make sure you've got 2 gig+ RAM.

If you want Aero to run fluidly, you need a good 3d display adapter. Something with the power of a 6600GT or better should do the trick, though I'm not up on my laptop 3d chips/chipsets currently.

btw, it's a shame to hear that Vista sucks up more RAM and CPU time even with Aero disabled.
