How will Vista perform on my laptop?

My laptop is currently running XP. I was thinking about installing Vista on it because I work in IT and I need to start using and learning this thing.

But... my laptop performs beautifully right now and I don't want to slow it to a crawl... How much of a performance hit can I expect? Especially in regards to video? I don't need the Aero interface, if it looks the same as XP that is fine by me.

Here are my specs:
1.5 ghz pentium m processor
2 gb ddr memory
60 gb 4200 rpm IDE hard drive
video - integrated Intel Extreme Graphics 2, 64 mb shared memory.

Also, I understand my laptop is a little old and that the hard drive is particularly slow. I've contemplated putting in a different hard drive, but currently XP seems to be running fine with it. Would Vista be slower unless I put in a faster hard drive?

well all you'll be getting is better security. your laptop's graphic card doesn't support aero so it won't have all the fancy effects that microsoft advertises as you know. and yeah that harddrive is pretty slow. atleast you've got 2GB of ram.

i dunno. i'd stay with XP. do you have a desktop? or just a laptop. cause that laptop won't run vista well.

To be really spot on, download and run the Microsoft Vista Upgrade Advisor.

Vista

It is free, and does a thorough job of checking out your laptop's ability to run Vista. Chances are it will say "No" because of the graphics sub-system. But - that would just mean no Aero.

If that is the case, stick with XP Pro like the man said.

Keep your fingers crossed that it will at least boot up.

I have a desktop too but my desktop is slower than my laptop (im in the process of replacing it but I just havent seen new video cards come down in price far enough yet)

I ran the upgrade advisor and it passed. although who knows what "passed" really means.

Microsoft recommended 128mb ram for XP, so we already know they are screwy in the head.

hmm, i suspect you are way off. 2gb ram is PLENTY for vista to run fast. 4200rpm drive is FINE, i use one in my vista laptop. graphics? he wont be able to run aero, but who cares. in all reality, his laptop will run just fine with vista installed.

Passing the upgrade advisor means that it would run Vista. It does not mean fast or slow it means that Vista would load and run.

I am not familiar with the Laptop's Video level. It might be that it does not even support Vista advanced graphics.

If you run Vista with the advanced graphic Off it probably would not take a big hit.

I can tell what I do under such circumstances.

I use Acronis True Image and backup the Laptop through the Network to another computer.

I would install (or upgrade) to vista and try.

No good. I boot to Trure Image from its Boot CD and Recover back the XP Back up.

The whole process would take 2 to 3 hours but I would know the technical score. As oppose to the Emotional On Line score.
