The CP creation and distribution across state lines is a handful of federal felonies right there. The feds should pursue that.
The state should have pursued the rape charges, he admitted to them, why let him off the hook? I understand not going full bore with a dozen of each charge (for each count) because he's cooperating but at least get him for one charge of all the major crimes involved.
As I understand it he is not accused of having manufactured CP - just having viewed CP created by Russell Taylor and perhaps other CP (the Taylor warrant affidavit refers to Taylor being in possession of CP and bestiality porn that he was not involved in creating). If there were evidence of Jared having made CP they would most certainly have charged that, or at a minimum mentioned it in his plea agreement.
If I were Jared's attorneys my main focus would be on trying to prevent him committing suicide (as Taylor attempted to do when he was arrested). Jared has gone from being an independently wealthy, fairly young guy to being a pariah who will emerge from prison, years from now, penniless and treated like a pariah, needing to find a place to live as a registered sex offender. That would be hard on anyone.
Actually, when I was a Air Force JAG defense attorney about 12 years ago I had a client charged with CP possession die in a car accident while he was pending trial. It appeared to be either suicide or his falling asleep at the wheel (it had happened at night and there were no signs of attempts to brake - I believe he was going 70+ when he hit a tree). I had never met him in person and have no idea of whether he was guilty, but he was, like most people allegedly involved in CP, smart, computer savvy, and adamant about his innocence.
