i actually want to see what you guys think about this subject... will it eventually mean more to type the full word than using "shortcuts" or alternate letters?

As long as there are 14-16 year old kids there will always be "1337" speek. Most likely, words will get shorter. To the point they are down to one or two letters.

"G UR SCH A DH BG! LLL!!!!111"

But I don't think there will be much change to it anytime soon.

to tell the truth, I really hope it does die out. For one thing, most of the kids that I meet in games that actually use it (not them joking around) are little punks that think they are "all that and some pocket change they stole from a bum".

Also, I'm sure their grammar suffers from butchering every sentence that they type out on a computer. I had to sit and try to figure out what the heck some kid said to me in counter-strike today. It wasn't that he used 1337, but that he cut out half the words that should have been there. Even with my poor spelling, I at least TRY and write the word I want.

I don't know, but I saw an article a few months ago about the NEW way kids are typing to confuse their parents, l33t speak!
they included "lol", "brb", etc and all that kind of stuff.

That made my crack up. The normal shortcuts people use to chat are NOT leet speak. Also, this article was written in 2005 and it was making leet speak out to be a new thing.
And I don't know about you guys, but i've never known anyone who used leet speak to hide what they are saying from their parents, they did it to be l33t
The article claimed that leet speak was used by online bullies, so that their parents didn't know they were being online bullies....

some peoples' ignorance amazes me.

Nope, now they make images in paint, then transmit files, so as to avoid detection by certain tracking softwares. ;)

I'd like to see it move to Binary or Hex, now that would really confuse people.
