How wide should I make my site?

I'm redesigning my site and would like it to have a specific width.. I have it set as 1024, but is that too wide?

It's webdesigners like you that ruin my websurfing experience, what with my 14" monitor and 640x480 resolution...

But really, you might want some border space on the sides and account for the scroll bar/window borders that eat up pixels.

I like webpages that are about 1/4 the width of my total desktop ... so 800 pixels wide is perfect. though i HATE sites that open up a new window and won't let the user resize.

700-750pix

won't make the site to cramped for those at 800x600, and since hardley anyone uses 640x480 anymore you won't alientate many users at all.

I agree. Even running 1024 resolution I often have other windows and I don't want to have to maximize a site just to see it correctly. Unless you can control your audience you should try for a design that gracefully resizes to any window 600 to 1000 wide. I know people like to make fixed graphics a major part of the page design, but see what you can do with bleeding the edges of the graphic into a resizable element behind it.
