How/Why did the Democratic Party get highjacked by the far left?

I am not a mindless dupe willing to blindly follow the Rebublican party over a cliff, but unfortunately this two party system leaves me little choice.

Why cant the leadership of the democratic party find its way back to a reasonable position? Its present platform leaves average, God fearing, hard working people like myself with no choice other than to continue to support the republicans.

Believe me Mr Bush IS NOT the darling of the "religious right" (because I say so and I happen to be the yardstick by which the religious right is measured ;))

All joking aside the left is alot further left than the right is right so to speak........

What ever happened to a normal, happy, America with a bright future?

The problem with the Democrats is not that they've moved left, it's that they don't seem to be about anything.

The conservatives have won the war, and until the Democrats either reinvent themselves or go away and are replaced by something else I am afraid we are doomed to what amounts to one party government.

There was never a "normal, happy America", anyway. That stuff is all revisionist history.

If it's all black and white, right or wrong then choice is irrelevant anyway.

I think the above posts got it right. The democratic party lacked a message, so the farther left folks who DO have a message designed to get into the drivers seat. The passive/indecisive moderate wing of the democratic party then, wanting nothing more than Bush out of office decided to play along.

As for the right wing, I'm disappointed that no one there had the balls to come up with a republican candidate to run against Bush. They have the majority of the control in Washington yet an increasing number are growing uncomfortable with Bush's actions. So we're left with a far left Democratic Party and a far right (and yes, it IS far right) Republican Party, leaving us with not only a divided country but also moderates as a new generation of swing voters for this election. Thats how I see it

I gotta ask what era you grew up in?

Pre-60s?
60s-70s?
80s?
90s?

Both parties are on paths to destruction.

And dont say it can't happen. Its happened, in the past, and it will happen in the near future(20 years). Mainly for the reason you said. The majority of americans dont agree with either party. Eventually this section of america will become collectively mobilized.

Yup, what I was going to say. Children, for the most part, think their life is great. Their Parents do everything to make their lives great. Once leaving Home, they suddenly realize that all is not what it seems. IOW, being an Adult sucks! :)

The America I "grew-up" in ......

Honored its veterans
Honored its mothers and fathers
Respected and cherished life
Understood there was such a thing as self-responsibilty
Deversity did not mean Perversity
Fought to defend the cause of freedom WITHOUT apologizing for it

Obviously I could go on and on.......

You know what America needs is adult supervision

Religious Right is an oxymoron as they are seldom right! In fact if the Republicans could find a way to divorce themselves from the Ridiculous..err Religious Right they'd find more support from the Moderates than they already do.
