I don't care about any other resolution than 1280:1024. Being that I'm on an LCD, that's really all I can game with or else the picture is horrible (Even though I know my system cranks out 3dmark beautifully, on my display it looks like ass since it's on 1024x768). I find it funny that everyone said 3dmark03 shows nothing of the quality of futuregaming, when infact for DX9 it looks to be pretty darned close. Albeit, a little overkill (even my 9800pro averages 30FPS or so).

....Not to turn this into a 3dmark flamefest, I still only use it when building a new PC just to maeksure everything is alright.

One would think the framerates will suffer a bit in MP too, with the added load. I cannot imagine playing a game in 800x600. I have not resorted to that since my Savage4. That l'il 64bit wonder did 'triffic at that but took a big hit at 1024x768. Radeon 7200, 8500 and 9500 have let me stay in the zone; well within, I should say. I refuse to reduce resolution and indeed would be miffed if I have to reduce any A/V options in a game -particularly if there wasn't even some hardware available for $150 that would alleviate the problem. I just would not buy that game until it was playable at my expected level.

Doesn't your NEC allow you to disable stretching and just center 1024x768 or is that only on the DVI models?

you can push the settings far enough back to run on a geforce classic, its one of the features of the graphics engine.

so if your system was built in the last 3 years i think youre safe.

This thread is just asking for nvidia vs ati flames.

ill just quote myself since no one seems to get it.

YOU DONT NEED 3 GHZ + R9800 TO RUN HL2, YOU ONLY NEED FOR MAXIMUM SETTINGS.

1.4GHZ + Geforce classic + 512MB will run HL2 acceptably in DX8.

I have a 2100+, 9700 Pro and a 1GB of RAM. The RAM is fast enough that I could upgrade to a Barton and be in the 3000-3200 range. However I am going to wait until the game ships and more benchmarks on different hardware configs are done. I am concerned about what the minimum frame rates will be. I would be happy with 50-60 FPS average (1024x768) but if the rates drop much below 30 that would be too distracting for my tastes.

I may just wait to play the game until next spring when I am planning on building a new system with the latest and greatest available at that time. For me, waiting another 4-6 months to play HL2 isn't a big deal.
