How well grounded do you need to be when putting a computer together?

i personally try to roll across my plastic chair mat in my fuzzy socks before working on my puter.

I work on carpet but I've never had any trouble with static I just touch the PSU before I pick up a new componant

I don't pay any attention, but probably end up touching something metal in the chassis before i touch anything else (although I don't make sure I do or anything)
However, my machine is just lying on it's side with a few potentiometers sticking out and the side off, so I don't exactly make sure that it is well protected...

I usually ground my self on the chassis and then wear a grounding strap to be safe
