I am thinking of buying evga 8800gts 640meg or superclocked version. does the regular version overclock well?

650/1000(2000) for me and I haven't really spent time to go higher. Have the newer versions been getting poorer overclocks?? I got mine when it first came out.

mine gpu/shader is 648/1458. memory is 1Ghz (2000Mhz DDR)

and g80's gpu clock generator/crystal works in certain incremements.

following is a chart which shows the "set" speed and the actual speed:

"set" frequency.....actual speeds

Mine was 648 / 1006=2012 effective

btw, imo...the superclocked version is a waste of money. The standard does fine with stock cooling and overclocking.

650 975 here. ati tool artifacts at higher memory speeds every 60 seconds, but it is stable at higher speeds.

I just bought one (the superclocked version), haven't even had it a week and already running it at 625/1000. I figured getting that OC version might have a better chance at OC'in well but it seems like peeps are getting high speeds regardless. I'm really happy with the card and getting great performance with new games even with my aging 3.8Ghz P4 Cedarmill. Temps are getting a bit warm though, 71C with a 29C case ambient. Not sure what a "safe" temperature is. I

Your temps are just about right. :)

Very helpful table, I'd say its safe to expect an OC in the 604 to 648MHz range with the stock cooler and no fan adjustments depending on your case temps and cooling. I don't think there's any binning going on with the OC versions and the GTXs seem to have the same maximum clockspeeds although they tend to get a little bit higher on the memory OC. In that sense there's a higher price to performance OC'ing delta with the GTS than the GTXs although the GTS will never fully close the gap because of the laser locked shaders.

I've mentioned to Derek here on AT a comparison of max OCs and inspecting the actual core revisions on the normal versions and OC versions would be more helpful than a 15 card G80 normal shoot-out or a 15 card G80 normal version shoot-out, but they haven't done anything like that. Been running at 621/1000 for a few months now. The 2 times I thought I had problems turned out to be my mobo burning out a RAM kit. Current rig is easily the most stable and highest performing rig I've ever owned. I'm very happy with it.

650/2050 but YMMV.

Normally you see them hitting ~625/2000 without much trouble.

I'm waiting on a pci-slot cooler to help get some warm system temps to get out of the system, because right now my 8800GTS runs pretty damned hot under load.
and I'm at 620/1000(2000).

Hmm im alittle pissed at my card. My 8800GTS 640mb is at 621/1000. Had it like that for about a month and a half. Now for some reason it freezes when im using ATI Tools. ANy ideas?

Forceware version is 158.19 btw.

Is the shader clock configurable by any of the tools? Or do you have to flash the normal version with Superclocked BIOS to mod that?

Rivatuner, but with 100 series forceware you'll have to for the 9792 version in the power user tab. Then it should work.

The shader clocks automatically go up as you up the core speed by a certain percent. So don't worry about those.

not at this time. shader speed is relative to gpu clock, as shown in the chart in my earlier post.

Looks like you can just use RivaTuner for OC'ing and fan control with the 158.19s. I noticed OC'ing is back with this driver update when I went to change fan speed settings earlier today.

Well, RivaTuner didn't work with some of the other 100-series drivers that needed to be installed manually or with modified .inf, which is why a lot of people including myself started using ATITool to begin with.

As for why its locking up, check your temps. Its warmer now where I am and generally not uncommon for a previously stable OC to become unstable in the summer months. That ATI Tool scan really heats up the GPU....like 15-20C in seconds so I'd look there first.

RivaTuner works fine, you just have to run it in emulation mode. It goes up to 70c with the fan at 80%.

FWIW I used ATI Tool briefly yesterday (only had 10min to play with it). I found that memory would start causing weird little artifacts (yellow squares) at around 990-1000MHz, but ATI Tool would not detect it, so I manually stopped it and will probably use 975MHz to be on the safe side.

For the GPU, it gets to about 635MHz and then locks up. I will probably back off to 610-615MHz for stability.

ATI Tool is a pretty cool little program.

I've got the PNY 8800 GTS 320 but I start getting problems at around 630/930 (artifacting from memory, hard crash if I clock the core higher). I run 100% stable and prolonged at 580/880.
