Well, RivaTuner didn't work with some of the other 100-series drivers that needed to be installed manually or with modified .inf, which is why a lot of people including myself started using ATITool to begin with.
As for why its locking up, check your temps. Its warmer now where I am and generally not uncommon for a previously stable OC to become unstable in the summer months. That ATI Tool scan really heats up the GPU....like 15-20C in seconds so I'd look there first.
