On tablets devices specifically because it's obviously going to take a hold on PC's quickly (It's Windows). How do you think the market/consumers will respond and how will it translate to their share in the tablet space, specifically in a time from of 6-10 months after launch? THis is including both x86 and ARM.

Actually, I would've thought the opposite: it will do well on tablets, but not so much on desktops.

What reason is there for the market to upgrade from Windows 7?
 
There isn't. As with all windows, Windows 8 will come with new PCs, and people will stick with it. It'll gradually overtake current windows.

Well once a new version of Windows is released, aren't OEMs forced to use that version? I'd wager after release all PC's on store shelves would be running it, and there really is no other Windows option for consumers. It will eventually just overtake older Windows.

Upgrading is a whole different matter I suppose. We've still got hallf the world running on XP

XP's support ends on 2014. The lack of security patches at that point should get the corporate people to upgrade (Most to Windows 7 instead of 8), and home PC's still running XP are slowly dying off now that it's no longer available for sale.
 
I think that the success of windows tablets will rest on how well it can actually run windows programs. I think it will get the 10% share you listed just by name alone, and when people see it in their local best buy, they will like it cause they are familiar with windows PC's.

However, I don't think it reaches much more than 10% unless the price is insane. iPad has become a trademark name for tablets, so they are going to continue to sell like crazy. Android has produced many levels of tablets, which allow users to really pick and choose price wise. I think it is most likely however, that Android will lose more market share to Windows than iPad will.

I really want to play with Windows 8 on a tablet, cause if it can do what I want, I will be getting one.
 
Didn't fully read the whole article and assumed it was all windows so I am the lone vote that says leader.... dont think that will happen in the tablet space.... I think they will be a player though (and probably the #2 player in tablets).

To me the tablet thing really doesn't matter.... its all about what % of pc's have touch screens because that is the best way to interact with w8. I predict that when windows 8 ships 25% of all pc's sold will have a touch screen (tablets and convertible laptops mostly) but by the end of the windows 8 cycle you will see that number climb to 50%. I have always seen windows 8 as a transition os from mouse/kb to touch and the metro app store.

Best buy alone will guarantee people see windows 8. I also expect to see some exclusive really awesome tablets come from nokia..... IMO a nokia tablet could sell very well against the ipad.

by the time it ships there will be something like 100 million ipads in the wild. what is it going to do that the ipad doesn't do? not like the app store is going to be any better
 
x86 and ARM Windows 8 tablets are very different devices. One is a computer, one is an appliance. If you want to clump them together, then I'm going to say they'll be reasonably successful.
 
On the desktop/laptop market, it will eventually supersede and eclipse Windows 7 as new PCs are sold.

On the phone/tablet market, its already dead. Completely and totally dead. That market is going to be duked out between Apple and Google et al.

This. MS never had a successful mobile os. Not even wince was good.
 
I voted for a small share but I wouldn't bet against these tablets doing better than that.

Why?

Because Dell and HP are desperate. While their competitors like Apple, Asus and Samsung are having this tablet party they are left out in the cold. HP tried to buy its way into the market and failed miserably, Dell simply isn't cool enough to make decent tablets on their own.

They need Windows 8 to succeed, or they will be left out of the next big thing. I expect them to rip off Asus's Transformer design within a year.
 
The latest Skydrive announcement was very promising, sounds like things are coming together, including the settings being associated with your account (so you can move to different machines and your profile follows). I think if they get this all working together the way it sounds like, the overall inertia of Windows on laptops and desktops will help their phone and tablet business.

"Oh you're coming in today for a laptop? Your desktop already runs Windows? Did you want a Windows tablet as well, they will work perfectly with your desktop and laptop??"

As for me, I'm in. Whole house is Windows outside of the OG Droid alarm clock 😛

Why do you think so? There still space for a significant third player to enter, plus it looks like they are doing a lot of good work with the software side of things.

The real question mark is the hardware, which IMO will be fine.
 
Don't think adoption will happen right away - and I really don't see it doing great on Tablets. Windows is just too bloaty.

Has there been any mobile MS OS that even comes close to iOS or Android? Nope. Even as Android tablets flounder, they've still likely outsold WinMo, WinCE, and WP7 combined. WP7's UI is awful. Sure its fluid and smooth, but its cumbersome and difficult to navigate. Windows 8 tablets are rumored to start at 600 dollars, and that alone will stunt their sales, when you can get decent Android tabs for 400 or less and an iPad for 500. App stores for Android and iOS are mature and robust, offering high quality apps in every category. MS Marketplace is not, and with WP7 not moving any product, what incentive do developers have to work it?

There usually isn't much room for a third player either.

Also, I wanna wait and see. But I will try it as soon as its available, wont be waiting a whole year like I did with other platforms.

Microsoft's main point is that tablets should not be thought of as "expensive play toys" but the future of PCs. Until you build an OS that treats them that way and continue making people buy a PC/Mac, that future will never come. Because honestly, when you really sit down and look at what 99% of people use a computer for, it's focused on these things: browsing the web, editing documents, listening to music, watching videos, and MAYBE playing a game or two. The absolute lack of file management of any kind in the iPad is the reason why Microsoft has the potential to win this thing.

Side-note: I *believe* I saw a W8 tablet featured in the last episode of Hawaii Five-O. It looked like a new and nifty Windows tablet.

The UI is a personal choice thing. However I think the apps will come very quickly. It's Windows, honestly... there isn't much to say about that. All current Windows 7 apps (Sans ARM) will run on it, and the popular ones will most likely be updated to fit into metro. There is a much larger opportunity for developers here.
 
It will do good eventually, but it won't be fast at all. I fix computers for a living, and probably 90% of the calls I get (60 or so a month) the person's still running XP. It's going to be a good while before that changes around. If I can buy a 10" tablet running Windows 8 that'll run my Windows programs. I'll jump on one in a second.
 
I think in a year or two, windows laptops will transition from ultrabooks to transformers. So majority of laptops will be tablets.
