How Well Do Xeons Work in DC, Especially D2OL

I have found a deal on a pair of Xeon 500 with 1MB L2 with board and ram in package deal. Anyone know if this dually setup would compare to a single 1.3 GHZ Celeron Tually? I dont want to spend a couple hundred on a setup like that if cheaper setups will do much better.

Thanks

John

I've been curious myself, but I read that you have to install a node for each processor independent of each other. You're planning something, huh?🙂

Hi Pete, yes I have some plans to add at least 2-4 nodes but over a little time since work is in a depressed market right now and income is minimal. So Im looking for the best bang for the buck in a bare bones DC project boxes (Under 150.00 per node).

How did you get your setup cooking so hot yesterday? LOL You were putting out some Candidates yesterday! 🙂

I dont mind running an agent for each processor. Dspy keeps track of all of them via network. 🙂

I made a dump from my secret weapon!! P3 550.😱 On Friday I bought a Gigabyte GA-7VEML MB from TWCO for 39 dollars and a XP1600. I've got to go get a cheap PS(have a spare hdd) and I'll have that running soon. They also have that MB and an athlon 1gig w/fan for 76dollars. Anyhow,By next weekend we should be a little bit stronger.

Dasm! Great deal! 🙂 Me thinks Ill go shopping around a bit more.. 🙂 I just worry about Athlons running too hot in the summer months running at 100 percent.

I know that anything with 1MB cache kicks some seriouse butt in SETI. I have some 400MHz XEONs with 1MB cache that I'm looking to get rid of pretty cheap. I'm not sure how they would do in D2OL though since I'm still pretty much a n00b to the project.

I'm getting excited about tomorrow because then I'll have time to play around with Dspy.🙂

Ive only had Dspy since yesterday evening. Its just a more compact version of the Agent...not as much a memory hog, for monitoring what is going on, and I can view all of the stats for my daughters agent at the same time. You can monitor up to 10 nodes 🙂 I havent explored all the other graphical views it gives yet. The primary reason I was considering the Xeons was that the package includes a nice ASUS board and 4 sticks of CAS2 RAM. But at the same time if it doesnt put out as much as a single modern processor in the same price range or less I will try something else. It does carry the benefit of only needing one case, one PSU, and one HDD, one CDROM, Floppy, video, network card, etc.

Im getting hooked on this DC stuff dangit! 🙂 Im thinking of trading off my digicam to increase the output! LOL!

Now thats what I like to hear.😉

I'd assume (from a theoretical POV) that your Xeons would be similar in performance to Pentium 3s, but if the process running on them is heavily dependent on memory bandwidth, you'll see more performance with a Xeon than with a similarly clocked Pentium 3. One way to tell this is to (on an Athlon, since those are easy to unlock) raise the FSB and lower the multiplier at the same time (so the frequency stays the same) and see if the performance stays the same or goes up. If it goes up, you could tell that the process is heavily dependent on memory bandwidth, and it would perform better on the Xeons than on Pentium 3s.

I've been hooked for some time. Right now I'm in the process of building up an old AT formfactor system with an AMD K6-2 400mhz that overclocks well up to 500mhz. However, I'm still in need of a socket 7 motherboard, since the one that I was using on that comp a long time ago (when it was my main and only workstation) is dead (hint, hint - anybody got one that they want to part with for a small amount of cash? 😉 )
