When I went years ago, we brought stuff on board. Then again it was a British ship owned by a small, independent line. I remember my parents smuggling on a giant bottle of rum punch. Those were the days, before all the BS they have now. And they wonder why nobody is travelling.

It really depends on the line. For example, Princess explicitly lets you bring 1 bottle of wine on board, per person.

Metal detector and xray scan of the carry on bags. They also took a look at many (maybe all) carry on purses, etc. even with the xrays. Lots of looks at the documentation and questions asked about it. Went on one last October.

Have your gf/wife hide the coke in her vag. Much more comfortable than sticking it up your arse.

Where did you get people aren't traveling? Most major cruise liners still fill their ships. NCL and RCI both launched new ships in 2010. Disney is launching its mega ship the Dream soon. NCL and RCI also have new ships launching in 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Most major cruise lines do noy allow you to bring on any alcohol at embarkation. Any duty free alcohol has to be stowed by the cruise liner when boarding at ports.

I have been on 2 cruises and packed liquor bottles in my checked luggage both times, with no problems.
They will confiscate it from your carry-ons though.

I cruised on NCL and Royal Caribbean.

not to hijack the thread but what about home made food wrapped in aluminium foil? my 4-yr old only eats certain foods and chips and if I wrap them in foil and zip lock bags, is that ok?
if I bring wine on board, don't I have to pay cork fee per bottle?
and I'm guessing bringing in a vodka bottle is a strict no-no?
what about sealed red bull and coke cans?

for those curious, yes, i'm taking my first ever cruise this may. taking NCL to Alaska!

Just got back from the cruise on Friday. (port was closed for hours coming back due to Japan).

Easily snuck vodka on in the screw-top wine bottles. Also we went through ZERO customs on the way back in. I could have had a kilo of China White in my buttcheeks and nobody would have said a thing. I dont know if this is because of the earthquake or what, but it was odd.

I visited La Pharmacia in Cabo and got caught with some recreational items on my way back onto the cruise ship because of the foil in the metal detector...I informed the guy it wasnt narcotics..he looked at them for a second, and let me go on no problem.

The easiest way to get something on ? Put it in your pocket, and walk aboard with it. They dont pat you down or anything like they would at an airport. I wouldn't recommend reentering the country with anything though. Those custom agents stare you down, and can sense anxiety.

my friend just came back from a Disney cruise, and they let you bring booze on board. I guess they want you to have a good experience so you will come back with your kids again.

I don't know of a single cruise line that will not let you bring food on-board. The more food you bring, the less they have to feed you :).
