Great advice for a high school senior in the month of March !

He's a HS junior. If he works hard for the rest of this quarter, and hard in the first quarter in the fall, and possibly in the winter depending on college deadlines, he could bring up his GPA substantially.

What are you doing in this thread? Don't you have you creditcard site to spam?

Made good grades, graduated 11th out of like 800+ in my class, played basketball and won a Texas 5a state championship, going to the university I wanted to. I'd say it was pretty good.

Whoops didn't read the OP carefully. GPA wise, its basically over for him after the 4th qtr of Jr. year since the UC system only cares about semester grades and ELC does not use senior year grades as part of their decision.

As for the credit card spam thing or whatever, I'm not even affiliated with that site. Citi has a $50 incentive for referring a new person. That site takes $10 and gives the person the other $40.

And as for the OP, of course there's lots of sh!t I would've done differently like study more but I did what I did, got a 3.6 cumulative GPA, and currently reside at UCI :)

I took two years of non-AP Spanish. I believe its required by the University of Nebraska to have at least two years. I would have taken four, but, I had some extentuating circumstances.

Got a 3.49 GPA in a private college prep school. I believe that 3.49 was only good enough for 48-49th percentile rank in my graduating class (so a 3.5 GPA was roughly the median GPA). I got A's in Math, low B's and C's in English, pretty much solid B's in everything else. Took 2 bands which gave me a big GPA boost.

Took Honors Alebgra I, II, Geometry.

Took AP US History (got a B for the class, 3 on the exam), and Comp. Sci. A back when it was in C++ (got an A in the class, 5 on the exam).

Overall, these credentials were around average for my school and class.

Had A's and B's, went to college and had a 3.2 gpa but dropped out, now I'm a bartender. Might go back to school, might not, but I'm not looking to get rich or anything so I think I'm just gonna go with the flow. :)

Dude, aim higher than UCI! If you have at least a 3.7, a few extracurrics, a few AP's here and there, and a decent SAT I'd say you're probably guaranteed to get into UCI and have a shot for UCSD or UCLA.

I'm a first year and UCI has already notified the class of 2006 of their acceptance and rejections so I think you'd be better off asking them :)

But I took 4 AP's, got a 1410 on the SAT 1s, was in the school newspaper, a service club, and a few other extracurrics. Wasn't in any sports and didn't really have any "personal difficulties".

Dude HS is pretty much all about meeting the right people and sh!t. If you don't I've learned most people become relative loners 4 life.

Concentrate on forging relationships.

High school is what it is. If you really want to go to a fairly exclusive school you need to keep your GPA up. I made the mistake of being a slacker and then having it catch up with me. I have a 3.2-3.3 GPA not because I'm not smart or because HS is hard, it's just that I always do enough to get by in classes that I don't particulalry enjoy. History? English? I get A's no problem. Math? Science? I usually never really like or understand the material and just don't put the effort in. I get by with a high C or low B but it ends up bringing down my GPA.

I thought I wanted to go to UW Madison next fall (I'll graduate from HS this June) but I got the bad news from them a few weeks ago. I know exactly why I was denied; My GPA was too low, I applied late, and I didn't have many extracurriculars. My ACT score (29) is above average for accepted freshman (27) but my GPA (3.2) is well below the average (3.7). I've taken all of my Junior and Senior year classes at the community college rather than the HS so I'm pretty sure that the difficulty of my courses wasn't an issue. Not taking classes at the highschool kind of disconnected me from it so I haven't been involved in any extracurriculars. I applied early in february but early application deadline was Dec 15th so with my weaknesses it's understandable that I didn't get in.

Given another chance would I go back and do all the busy work and study harder to have a higher GPA? Honestly, probably not. I have far more social and personal regrets about HS than academic ones. Had I been accepted to Madison there's a good chance my procrastination would've caught up with me and I would've failed some classes or at the least had really ****** grades. I'm now going to go to a smaller, easier, state school instead and I'm sure it will work out fine.

That's part of it. Not that I recommend getting trashed every weekend or smoking pot on a daily basis, but live a little. Don't be one of those social, drama-obsessed kids that can't stand to be away from the group or without a girlfriend but make an effort to go and hang out with a lot of different people.

I was slightly socially awkward going into highschool, really shy around new people, not a great communicator. This kept me from doing much outside of school and made it tough to develop friendships and whatnot. I've mostly grown out of it now but it's not always easy to change who you are in the minds of other people. This is the main reason that I'm really excited about going away to college-- thousands of new people who have no idea who I am or used to be. I know I'm getting OT and I don't mean to hijack, I just want to let any youngers people here know not to make the same mistakes I did.

This come as a shocker to me...or at least what my friends and family told me.Are you sure?lol I mean so far I say my average GPA is 3.2 with a semester and a half away form grad. I'm taking the SAT this April(yeah pretty late) and I took 8 honors and AP classes total with a average of B-/C+ in all of them, 1 club(been in for all 3 years)and play the violin.

As for the people talking about the social aspects of HS...I consider myself in a good position right now.I 've been hangning with a very tight knit group of 9 people(same ppl since like the 6th grade),but I'm also friends with many other people and teachers.

Students admitted to UCI have a demonstrated record of academic and personal achievement. While UCI does not utilize a formula in selecting students, students admitted for the fall 2005 term share the following characteristics:

* An average high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.88 (note: UCI uses a maximum of 8 honors grade points in determining the GPA)

* The middle 50% of the admitted class has an SAT Verbal score between 560 and 670 and a Mathematics score between 590 and 700

* The average number of "a-g " courses (full-year) completed in grades 9 - 12 is 23

* 97% of all students completed at least four years of mathematics

* The typical student offered admission completed five and one-half (full-year) academic courses in the senior year

Of course, this is just the typical student. And the GPA you listed is probably UC unweighted :). As for your current grades, assuming unweighted, you've gotten into every single CSU, UCR, UCM, and UCSC so you're set. But don't limit yourself to the UC/CSU system. There's always GTO.
