After years of running Windows/Office/Adobe and only occasionally messing with Open Source and Free Software, I have finally made the switch. I thought I would post a system configuration that I found very nice- A template if you will.
OS:
Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Edubuntu - Probably the best version of Linux out there. Very GUI oriented and receives 6 months updates.
Fedora Core 6 - Very advanced, but still more GUI than others. Based off of Red Hat
Office/Productivity Apps:
Open Office 2.1.0 - Why not use it. It is everything Office is (For the most part). Not only that you can Export as PDF. It's great!
PDF Reader
Foxit Reader - Again, I can't believe I haven't been using this all along. It uses a fraction of Adobe's resources, and does everything you could need.
Media Player
VLC Media Player - Is there anything this media player doesn't do? It plays EVERYTHING you can ever imagine.
Web Browser
Firefox - Did you really expect anything else. It is the best Web Browser out there and you can see why.
Opera - If for some reason you don't like Firefox this is there as a back up. Excellent renderer and very solid software[/list]
Email Client
Thunderbird - Again, did you expect anything else. Head and shoulders above Outlook or Outlook Express.
File Archiver
7-Zip - Multi-Threaded; Opens all compressed file formats. Whats not to like?
WinRar - IMO not as good as 7-Zip but a great alternative.
Anti-Virus Software
AVS Anti-Virus - Once you get over the fact that the 3 dreaded letters are in there (And make sure to uncheck "Install Toolbar") you have the lightest and most capable Anti-Virus on the market for free.
If I missed a critical component let me know, but software development has reached the point where it is just as good as retail software in my opinion.
Right now I am still running Windows (I need a test bed) with a VMWare or Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft until I really truly feel comfortable with all the Linux commands. When that happens, my computer will, happily, become completely Open Source and free software.

(*Note*- This isn't intended to be redundant with the List of Open Source software. It was just intended to show a possible system configuration that works great)
