How to use (2) computers with dual monitor setup?

My current rig with all my applications is a XP PRO 32 bit machine with dual 24"monitors. I've just finished building a windows 7 ultimate 64 bit unit. I would like to incorporate the new windows 7 unit as my main computer. however I need both computers since some of the apps and printers from XP 32 bit will not run on the Wndows 7 64 bit. My thought was to connect the Windows 7 computer to the dual monotors. Connect both computers (hardwired) via my router. Keep the XP pro computer hooked up to all printers for now until drivers are available. I can also go wireless but thought I would get faster throughput using cables? Then if needed run the XP pro computer via remote desk top. Any thoughts of a better way to do this? Any thoughts on "INPUT DIRECTOR"

If your CPU is VT capable

, and you use Windows Pro or Ultimate you can download the free VPC and Win XP Mode.

Otherwise if Remote Desktop does not provide the flexibility that you need use UltraVNC.

I agree with the KVM. I set dual monitor dual computer pretty cheaply with minimal issues.
My suggestion is manual switch KVM and a manual switch video.

for under $12 you can get the kvm here:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...id=10108&cs_id=1010801&p_id=53&seq=1&format=2

and a second vga switch will cost under $7
http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...id=10106&cs_id=1010601&p_id=54&seq=1&format=2

you will also have to pay for cables to connect.

I like manual as I have gone through a few automatic hot key type KVM's and I feel they do not last more than a year or so.

Downsides:
1. You need to figure out audio seperately. You can try to find some switch or you could connect both pc's to one speaker system.. depends if you want audio on from both pc's simultaneously or not.

2. these particular model nobs can wear out and then you need a studier replacement or pliers to turn the switch

3. (minor) You need to have the KVM targeted to the pc while it is booting, otherwise it won't recognize your keyboard or mouse. (this particular setup is for ps2 not usb)

I agree with dual monitor KVM as well. There are many good ones at Newegg, many with USB and DVI. Most are good up to 1900x1200 which should be good enough for 24" monitors. With mine, I can share a printer and scanner via USB, as well as my USB keyboard and mouse. It also shares audio (mic and line out).

Good luck.

Manuals will not work with DVI. DVI relies on the information coming from the monitor. It will "sorta work" but windows / linux / video card will detect it as an unplugged monitor and disable it and reenable on switch with will tend to mess with dual setups.

I have out lasted tons of hot key KVM's though. As in need a new one based on tech changes before it died.
