I hate to start another thread just because my rig froze one me last night while running Prime95. Here are the sequences of events as best remembered...

1) Got my x2 3800+ along with 1gb ocz DDR400 (gold series) delivered by Fedex from ZZF last night.

2) Installed 1gb OCZ to make 2gb total system ram in my AMD rig. Bios saw 2gb as well as window (x64).

3) Removed 3500+, installed the new x2 3800+ w/o a hitch. Booted up into window which recornized it. Uninstalled previous AMD drivers, installed new amdcpu optimizer, rebooted, installed new amd utilities. Ran cpu-z which sees both cores as expected.

4) ran 3dmark06 and got a nice 60% cpu score boost from (previously 3500+).

5) ran 3dmark06 again in simultaneous encoding a dvd movie. Got essentially the same mark06 as (4). Both apps ran perfectly as expected. Nice dual core execution there!
6) before going to bed I overclocked to 2.42 ghz, ran 3dmark06 once more time w/o a hitch. Left the rig running Prime95 overnight.

7) Woke up around 6am, went to check the rig. It looks like the rig still running but when I tried to wake up the system by moving the mouse as I normally do. Zip! Nothing! Monitor shows blank. Hit CTL+ALT+DEL still nothing. Had to powered it down and rebooted it.

8) Running Prime 95 before I left for work. (I'll call my son to check later today if still running, keep my fingers crossed)

What happened at event #7? Did the cpu freeze?

Please note that cpu temps for the whole time was ~ 39-40c. I've been using the Artic Freezer 64 hsf.

i have a problem...i got my x2 3800+ installed it, WinXP x64 booted with no problems, i oced it to 2.7ghz wit no problems, installed the latest amd x2 drivers with no problems....but as soon as i installed the dual core optimizer and rebooted, it gets to the desktop and reboots continuously...i had to go into safemode and disable the dualcore file "amd_dc_opt" and now it boots fine....but the dual core optimizer isnt enabled...does anyone know how to fix this?

My god, please don't do this. Green peas are those things that come frozen in a bag, like this. Put that much on your IHS, and your going to have a goopy mess of thermal paste all over your motherboard.

...it's closer to a half-grain of rice.

I don't use the optimizer on my x64 os, i just install the X2 driver. When i tried the optimizer, i would get lockup's right at the end of transfering large data files to another drive on the computer and also over a home network.

Interesting...Have you o/c your x2 and run Prime95? Prime freezes my x2 at anything above stocked rate. I have optimzer installed and running x64 O/S.

I'd like to add that installing the X2 had one of the easiest heatsink installations ever...i put it on like it was nothing and it was secure too...nice large heatsink too. other than thermalrights or zalmans...the retails sinks can't be beat.

I'm running at 2.5ghz, I've ran 2 instances Prime95 and memtest86+ overnight without errors. Also Superpi 32m completes . I didn't do much testing, i installed the optimizer and had some disk transfers not completing so i uninstalled and everything been fine sense. It multitasks fine, so i'm not so sure x64 os needs this. Anyway, if you can't overclock at all there is a problem someware

I used about 1/2 to 3/4 a bb - is that ok?

What I usually do is put whatever amount you think is right (green pea/BB/rice/whatever) and spread it out over the IHS and get rid of the excess. That way when you put on the heatsink there's really no chance that you put too much and it squirts out on the board. Then again, I use Ceramique and it doesn't conduct electricity in the first place.

I'm bumping this up since I'm about to swap my 3000+ venice for a 3800+ x2. Does any one have an answer for DarkManX4lf and his question regarding dual core optimizer?

I don't want to install if it'll give me issues. I've had a long day as is.. :(
