How do you bring up the character map in Windows these days?

On iOS you just hold down the "o" key, and "ø" is one of the options. If you hold down the "O" key, then "Ø" is one of the options.

EDIT:

In XP it is here:

Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map

Must suck using an archaic O/S. Capslock + / + o = ø. On Android, it's long press for options, or modify key then above.

That's cute.

You think *nix systems are less archaic. :D

FWIW - OS X has similar awesome conventions for additional characters. And I love it.
But, IIRC, it lacks the very acceptable Alt + ### approach, and some heavily used characters are easier to get through that on Windows than it is to dig up character maps in the Unix-like systems. Only the most -- but not all -- common characters are mapped to the standard keys in said OSs.

And mobile platforms have an entirely different approach which is not comparable. They have a virtual keyboard, where you can hold a key to see all the other options. This is not repeatable with physical keyboards, not without pissing everyone off.

Character map? It's far easier building special characters than it is to remember arcane character codes. Quick, what's "registered"? Time's up. It's Capslock(or any modify key of your choice) + o + r = ®

Can you "build" every single character?

Don't confuse my words, I very much like that approach to characters. I don't know if OS X has that capability to "build" based on adding more characters, I'll have to dig into that. However, I am sure there are plenty of characters that are not easily determined based on other characters that may look it. Registered is easy, it sounds like. It's an R plus a Circle, which is what it looks like.
