how to turn the router firewall off?

WoofyJr

Senior member

I just bought the dlink router di 604 and the internet runs great and the other enthernet to other comp works wonderful. The only problem is that I wouldn't able to access into some webiste due to firewall. I even can't update my anti-virus software. I even tried to enter dlink admin on website to adjust but it wouldnt allow me to enter enither. I strongly supsect it's the router firewall. I have no way to turn it off or adjust.

Any suggestion would be nice.. Thanks...

Are both your pc's hooked up to the router?

Can either of them ping the website you say won't load?

Have you asked someone else outside your lan to test the website to see if they can load it?

About your anti virus software, which one are you using? I use norton and I'm behind a di 704p fw and don't have any problems updating my definitions.

When you try to access the configuration page for your router ( http://192.168.0.1 on my di-704p ), are you typing "admin" in all lowercase? that's the default password afaik.

BTW, why do you want to disable the fw? Just to update your AV software? If so, just disconnect the router, turn off the modem, turn off your pc, wait a few minutes, then hook up one pc directly to the modem, turn on the modem, wait for it to finish booting and then turn on your pc. Now, update your AV software, and repeat the process for your 2nd machine. Once they're both done, turn both pc's off, turn off the modem, wait a few minutes, then turn on the modem, wait for it to boot, then connect the modem to the router, turn the router power on, then turn your pc's on (assuming the router is a DHCP server leasing out dynamic IP's to your 2 pc's) and you should be back to normal.

Hope this helps, if not, be a bit more specific on what your network layout is like atm, and a bit more detailed info on what you're trying to do, and what error msgs you see/don't see, and other possible relevant information to us.

You cannot switch off the Firewall on Entry Level Cable/DSL Routers.

The NAT Firewall is a by-product of the unit Routing.

No Firewall means No NAT, and thus no Routing.

The phenomenon that you described is not typical of Router?s performance. If your computer is working OK while you are connected directly to the Modem, either your Router need newer firmware, or it is faulty.

More on Firewall here:

Basic Protection for Broadband Internet Installation.

Doubt your firewall would inhibit you from a website but might not allow you to connect to an application over the web because of a blocked port. Put your PC in your routers DMZ and try the things you weren't getting into before

Yeah, both router and my computer is hooked. I am able to enter some internetnet. However some websit wont allow me. Including the aim chat direct connection, anti-virus software update, and the dlink admin website. I couldnt able to do anything about it. I even turned my alarm zone firewall off. NOthing helpful. I have never experienced like this untill I hooked router with my cable intneret.

My anitvirus software is Norton antivirus that comes with Northsystemwork. I never had any problem before.

THe only plm is i am having a hell of time trying to get into dlink admin so that I can adjust the firewall... I strongly believe it's relates router fireall...

The reaosn i want to turn router firewall so that I can update my antivirus verison and aim direct connections. Especially the dlink admin on website... I m so frustrated and am ready to throw my montior through the window heh...

LMAO!! 😉

heelllp..... I already pulled it out last week until I finally have time to try it agian tonight. I was able to upgrade the fireware on my dlink 604 somehow. It was like I won the lottery. After I set up the wizard and then restart it. Now i m still unable to connect 192.2168.0.1 agian to adjust the firewall... I m so fed up with it. IT WONT allow me access at all. I tried everything what u suggested with those username... nothing helpful I dont understand how I made it once and afte that I cant do anything again...

By any chance, did you read the manual that came with your router? what about going to Dlink web page and search for support from them.
I don't think is nice to make fun from a newbie, especially coming from a Golden member (you guys know what I'm talking about).

From Dlink: to access open your browser and type : http://192.168.0.1, username is admin and no password (leave it blank), then press ok.

Best regards

Hey guys, you can forget this problem now. Whew... I finally found a way to trick by upgrading the fireware agian. It finally allows me enter into set up wizard. I had to be careful to go all through agian to clean my mess... It works beautiful now. However, i dont see any firewall to adjust by using this. I guess it's not the router firewall unless I m wrong. I hope it will works with other website in the future. I will test it tonight and see what happens. I will have to figure what went wrong.

Sorry, I just got real frustrated. Ktweb but thanks for trying.

Eltano1, I followed everything on manual, even, on dlink support.com. NOthing helpful. It just simply won't allow me as it says 401 unauthroized or something like that. I dont understand why it wont. That's why I strongly supsected that it's the firewall from router. Oh well...

Thanks for your patience with me being newbie..... heh...

I'm glad that you finally were able to solve it. NM about being a newbie (I'm still learning as well), don't be afraid to ask, there are a lot of good people here willing to help you out.
About you getting the 401 error, one of the reason could be that your network settings didn't match with the router (like different subnet mask) or if you assigned the IP manually (static) in your PCS, they weren't withing the same range as the router (i.e 192.168.1.1 instead of 192.168.0.1)
