How to troubleshoot laptop hardware?

My HP laptop just decided to stop working on me out of the blue. I turn it on, fans kick on for a second then they seem to stop. Screen does not turn on, I do not hear any beeping of any sort, so I do not think the computer is posting. It literally just happened out of the blue. I was using it one minute. Unplugged it, plugged it back in somewhere else, turned it back on and nothing.

I figure it could be a motherboard (most likely?), possibly a video card and perhaps a power supply? I do not think it'd be the power supply as it does actually turn on and the cd-rom ejects with no problem. I do not have a clue how to troubleshoot the hardware on a laptop though. Its not like I have spare laptop parts hanging around. Any suggestions?
