How to treat a sprained back?

I've looked a few places online... but does anyone have some solid information on treating a lower back sprain.. i know someone who's going through a lot of pain and lack of mobility and is trying to take some serious medications to mask the problem.. im trying to provide an alternative

When my back was out of whack my doctor had me alternate between heat and cold applications. After work, applied heat for 15 minutes then cold for 15 minutes... repeat as necessary. Seemed to help.

Let it heal, but make sure it isnt left to get stiff...

My Dad's had a bad back for years... he finds the best thing is a decent hard bed. The softer the matress, the worse it is for your back.

well i read one medical journal saying NOT to overrest.. i dunno the validity in that.. but who knows
