how to transfer using firewire

i think this belongs here...anyway im tryin to transfer a bunch of files using my firewire cable to my new laptop but apparently its not as simple as plug and go...what do i have to do to set this up to send the files...its about 10gbs of stuff so this is really the only way i can send it i think
