My grandfather gave my mother a check, who doesn't have a bank account. She asked me to deposit it for her, wait for it to clear, and give her cash.

How can I do that? Our last names are the same (of course) if that helps - I'm assuming she signs it, then I sign underneath her name? Or does she need to write 'for deposit into the account of.." on it?

perhaps you and your mother could go into your bank together and the nice bank person could help you

She signs it and writes 'Pay to the order of XXXXXX' underneath her signature, then you sign it as well.

She signs it, gives it to you. You sign it and give it to the bank. How hard can you people make things.

Do exactly as poster above said. She said, 'pay to the order of your name', you sign it. Us banks aren't trying to make your lives difficult ;)
