yes because AFAIK the QPI controls the cache as well as ram and the cache is full speed, so when you raise core clock you raise cache speed putting more stress on the memory controller(QPI) and needing more voltage. QPI was actually the thing that was holding me back for the longest time as i thought i didnt need to mess with it much either.
Are you 100 percent sure about this? I thought the cache is actually the Uncore part of the CPU alongside memory controller.
Hm, it seems to be more complicated than i thought, would probably need to study it more in detail.
EDIT: According to this source, it is uncore:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/16044
"Turns out that both our test configuration and Intel's reviewer's guide had overlooked an important characteristic of the Core i7: it has multiple clock domains that govern its processing cores and what Intel calls its "uncore" elements, such as the memory controller, QuickPath interconnect, and L3 cache."
And i believe there is/are a separate multiplier(s) for these things, right? So they should not be affected by CPU multi increase, only by BCLK overclock...
Not saying now, you are not right, its still pretty possible i need to play with these other voltages as well, but i am bit confused now
