How to test internal LAN performance

And look for flaws in the cable, etc... without buying 1000's of $'s worth of equipment. Any decent software solutions?

Hmmm. I can't say anything authoritatively but I just use NetIQ. It tests performance from one node to another but it can't isolate whether the prob is the cable or something else.

Poontos, it depends a little on what NICs you have as some NICs/drivers don't report errors, but a crude way to do it is to hook up two PCs and run netperf (netIQ might work) or just a ftp server/client and transfer a large file (many megabytes). Then check your driver stats for errors, especially CRC errors. 1000BaseT NICs are even better for this because the 1000BaseT signalling is much harder on the cable.

MRTG ? You can push data from one side to the other and track the overall output speed.
It wont tell you line problems...without a fluke or "on the wire" solution you wont be getting that type of information.
