How to tell version (generation #) of my PS2 from SN??

how can i tell which generation my ps2 is? i've heard that there's a 3rd generation already.

I don't know how to tell, but I do know that there are 3 different PCBs. All have the same model #SCPH-30001.

yeah it kinda gets me pissed off that they're changing it already. the reason i was wondering is because i heard the newer generations have some sort of upgrade capability that the older generation(s?) don't have. i've heard that there are "cutoff" numbers in the SNs but i'm not sure what they are.

are you sure? i've heard of different versions of the US PS2 but i thought the upgrade differences were in the Japanese models. usually, the only mods they'd be doing this early would be to make the anti-piracy tougher to crack.

anyway, it costs quite a bit to do these mods, even slight changes. i'm probably wrong but it seems inefficient to have 3 diff. models after being out for only 6 months.

i think the upgrades include (but i'm not sure) a hard drive and a broadband connection.

yeah that's what i thought too. i just remember reading someting somewhere a couple weeksa go and i've heard a few people talking about it. i'm not even sure if there is a difference but i figured i'd ask to see if there was...

i might've read this at ign recently, Japan released the equivalent of the US PS2 in mid-April. it has a HD and modem (?) bay. also includes a DVD remote.
