Hey guys, just as the topic says. How can you tell what version of the WRT54G you have with the serial number?

Look at the serial number sticker on the bottom and it should say WRT54G v# on the sticker right in the model number slot.

Here ya go.

There are several versions of the WRT54G and WRT54GS. different power supplies, chipsets, features, though all based on similar firmware.

To find out which model you have please go by the Serial Number of your WRT54G/GS. This is the only true way of finding out.

Known serial numbers (first 4 characters) vs versions / Chipsets:

WRT54G
CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDF9 = WRT54G v3.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDFA = WRT54G v4.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CDFB = WRT54G v5.0 / BCM5352EKPB Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

NOTE: The WRT54G v5.0 has 2Mb/8Mb Ram, it uses VxWorks OS and is incompatible with 3rd Party Firmware.

WRT54GL
CL7A = WRT54GL / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

WRT54GS
CGN0 = WRT54GS v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CGN1 = WRT54GS v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CGN2 = WRT54GS v1.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CGN3 = WRT54GS v2.0 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CGN4 = WRT54GS v2.1 / BCM5325EKQM Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CGN5 = WRT54GS v3.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz
CGN6 = WRT54GS v4.0 / BCM5352E Chipset / CPU 200Mhz

I looked, and nothing. I've seen people asking for serial numbers to find out what version it is, but I do not know how to decode it. Anyone else?

Edit: Thanks c3p0! You type faster than I do. Which supports more 3rd party firmware? Or do they all have the same support for 3rd party firmware except ver5?

So are all of those a go for 3rd party firmware and reliability except CDFB = WRT54G v5.0 / BCM5352EKPB Chipset / CPU 200Mhz?

There is a sticker on the bottom of the router that says what hardware version it is....

if you are looking to buy one, it doesn't list Version number on the box, and most retailers aren't too keen on you opening it before buying it ;)

This is usefull, I wish I would have had it a few weeks ago.

I took my V5 back to Wal-Mart and found a V3. Works great after I uploaded HyperWRT + Tofu 12 on it. I highly recommend them.

Mine said v2.2 right on the UPC label on the outside of the box. Unless Linksys changed the way they print the boxes (entirely possible) I don't see why it would be any different for the newer models.

What are the first 4 letters/numbers of your router serial number? Mine is CDF1 which equals this:

CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0 / ADM6996L Chipset / CPU 125Mhz

It does not say what version it is anywhere on the router. That's the only way I know to determine the version if it's not marked on the router somewhere.

c3p0, people do not understand that ver 1 did not come with a label that says ver1. I know, because I have one that does not say the version # on it, that is why I asked the question in the first.

So this was just a test? Well did I pass or fail? Not sure why you didn't just post how to tell what version you have if it doesn't say.:confused:

Can't say for any other versions, but version 3 and version 5 do not say right on the box. You have to look at the S/N.
