How to tell if your IDE1 controller is bad?

I am having a problem with my motherboard. I started up today, got a primary disk fail message. So I put a new drive in, same message? For both drivers, the name was all messed up? 30 characters long with alot of $ signs? I have a MSI K7T limited edition.

That was it.... Stupid cable. I hope I still have a receipt. Its a really long round IDE cable.
