Is there a way to tell if your company is monitoring Internet use and scanning Emails?

read your IT /Email policy

most companies disclose in a policy statement (check with your HR dept.) that they monitor everything electronic

why would you use a network you cannot control to send sensitive email subjects with?

Technically, there is no way to tell. Legally, however, I think FoBoT is right -- they have to disclose their monitoring habits in a public policy.

Just send some E-mails about you stealing from your work, and your going to blow it all up to hide the evidence, then you'll soon find out.

Good thinking chief, if they weren't monitoring you before, they sure as Hell will be after you ask.

haha. No thanks :)

Sometimes I think they "may" tell you just to scare/prevent you from using the internet and email. Im not sure because I've been with a company where they require you to login via a proxy server with your user info each time you access the internet and used it for an hour or two total each day, for a few days and no one ever said anything to me. Didn't get a warning or anything like that... and of course i didnt go to porn sites or download any huge files. I did this for about a whole month before I gave them my 2 weeks.

Who bothered to look in a lake for a NIC?

no data, but with the NIC , they would have the MAC address, which would be in the logs, so they could complete the trail/nail him, ie prove it was him doing the naughty stuff

Technically, you can't. Legally they are supposed to tell you. If your doing something you think is ok, ask first. If not...

Is whatever you want to do worth losing your job over if they didn't play fair and tell you up front or publish it in the employee manual?

Few years ago, pre-cable internet and all, I would use dial-in with my dad's work to do research. I had to do a report or something small on plastic surgery, and one of the sites I wanted to research was blocked because it must have had a diagram of a breast or female body on it. My dad got a notice two days later that he had hits for visiting pornographic websites.

uh, i don't know about most places, but we have thousands of pc's , hence thousands of nic's
we don't inventory / track/ record the MAC of every pc/nic we have , and we don't have a way to tie it to a pc serial number, let alone know who is using what pc/nic/mac
