How to tell if a tomato has gone bad?

I was making spaghetti and was chopping up a tomato to add to my spaghetti sauce. When I sliced it open I noticed that the middle was kinda mushy and a little liquidy... and was a light shade of brown. I'm pretty new to cooking and I've never sliced open a tomato so I'm not really sure if that tomato was fresh or bad. Is the tomato OK to eat or should I toss it out? Also, how long do tomatos last after you buy them? I bought the tomatos on Monday.

Depending on the tomato type, it will be mushy/liquidy. Roma's are an example of this.

They shouldn't be brown though.

I personally get rid of them when they turn a VERY deep red since that is an indicater that they are getting mushy (I like tomatoes hard)

Most people however wait until they either begin to mold or notice wrinkles on the skin

Have you noticed any strange behavior on the part of your tomato lately? What kind of crowd has he been hanging out with?

For sandwichs or salad I won't use them once they start to get mushy, but for sauce you can use them right up until they first start to rot or turn moldy .... and yes a brown tomato qualifys as rotten!

sorry...bad links

It's a good thing this isn't a life or death situation for the OP.

Are you sure? <insert the usual "If he can't tell a rotten tomato from a good one, then maybe he doesn't deserve to live..." ATOT response>...😉
