How to tell a CPU is dead?

Related to the link above. I thought it was a MOBO problem, but I think it may now be a CPU problem (which I hope it is, swapping out a chip is much easier than swapping out the mobo). How can one tell whether or not a CPU is dead (aside from getting another chip and testing the system out with that chip)?

Basically the mobo light is on, when I boot it up, the light is still on, all the front lights come on, all the system fans come on. The only thing that doesn't work is the CPU fan and the mobo fan...

cpu fan and mobo fan??

mean like the fan on that big hunk of metal you slapped ontop of the cpu?
and another smaller fan on a smaller hunk of metal just below the cpu?

if the cpu fan wasnt working....its probably gone....
maybe u can take to local comp shop and have them test it?

Pulled the CPU out, no evidence of any physical damage. Still trying to acquire another CPU or rig to test the equipment out on...

as a point of information, the fans on your cpu and mobo have nothing to do with a working cpu, all they need is power from either a molex connector or a motherboard header... but if your system refuses to do anything and you don't hear any beeps (assuming your speaker it correctly hooked up) then chances are that you've got a dead cpu. i fried my first athlon 850... smelled like something had been burnt to hell and back...

hope that helps

i've only dilapidated one processor before and it was my old AthlonXP chip. it had physical damage though (chipped core from slamming a big HS on it).
