how to stop dropping wifi?

my macbook drops signal more than my pc did all month. it seems to just drop it and such but the wifi bars sill show. what are those extra options in the drop down and what do they do?

You could ask it to hold on tighter... 🙂

Anyway, I assume you are talking about Interference Robustness... I am pretty sure that is only applicable on Apple Airport routers, so you can ignore that. Past that, the other options aren't what you need either.

What brand router do you have? That probably is the culprit.

It's a bug introduced a few patches ago. Hoping 10.4.11 fixes it.

Move closer to the source.

sorry, but I have noticed that the wifi and bt abilities of my iMac are pretty piss poor compared to my Toshiba laptop. The BT is particularly bad... going bad outside of 10 feet and dropping before 20.

As such, I made sure to place my downstairs office nearly in line with the wifi conneciton. I use my laptop if I need BT (skype/vent) thereby allowing me to roam the house when needed.

This is all so weird to me since my MacBook usually has better reception than most notebooks, and has never dropped signal (when others haven't at least). I don't really have a way to test the bluetooth range of my MacBook so i can't really speak to that.

Mine drops signal usually only if I'm connected to my Airport Express at home, and I believe it's due to channel interference (or possibly a bad Airport Express unit).

My MBP had issues with my Microsoft MN700 wireless router. I turned off 802.11b support on my router and the issues went away.

Try looking for interference with iStumbler; I found an access point that was sharing my channel. The offending network is generally out of range, but once in a while it would wreak havoc like a leaky microwave on my wireless network. iStumbler shows what channels have traffic- try a channel the farthest away from the interference.

I have an airport express router, pre-N macbook pro, nintendo wii, and a pc desktop with 802.11b card on my network.

Update: Seems more solid so far with Interference Robustness turned on.

So far so good in OS X 10.5. Interference Robustness is no longer a visible option.
