My only experience in Logan International Airport involved having to sleep there overnight due to a canceled flight. I highly recommend that you do just about anything else other than that.

Take the shuttle bus from your airport gate to the Blue line (subway) station and take it to the Aquarium stop. It'll put you right at Fanueil Hall. From there you can walk all over. The North End, Boston Common, New England Aquarium, Newbury St, Downtown Crossing, etc...

30 min to get somewhere, 30 min to get back, 30 min to get thru security again + carrying my carryon everywhere would make it not worth my while to leave the airport

bar+tv
book
laptop+movie
sleep

all would work

This is what I was going to post. A 5 hour layover seems like a long time until you try to "do something" with that time. You'll have a a laptop with you, I'm sure. Take the laptop, go find a coffee shop/food place. Sit there, eat, drink something and surf. That's an easy two hours gone. Go buy a magazine, sit on the toilet and read it. That's another hour. By the time you get to the gate it's time to board.

Me personally, I wouldn't risk missing my flight just to "go do something." In a big city like Boston, getting to or from the airport is going to take an hour at least.

Do what I say and you'll be steps from the North End for Italian food or Fanueil Hall with it's large food corridor and the restaurants surrounding it.

The airport is relatively close to the city, actually. It does not take even remotely close to an hour to get to/from the airport. With that said, I'd still stick to staying... 5 hours sucks, but it goes by a lot faster than you'd think-- and you don't want to risk being late for your flight.

It's less than 30 minutes. A couple of minutes from the shuttle to the subway station and two stops to Boston.

If you are traveling on a weekday, give yourself at *least* two hours to get back to Logan and through security. Rush hour traffic and airport security lines are not to be trifled with in Boston.

Post back here after you miss your flight.

Yup, Boston's airport is basically a tunnel away from downtown, and if you're accustomed to public transit system the MBTA isn't very hard to figure out. If you really want to make sure to not waste any time, a cab ride isn't going to cost more than ~$15 or so each way.

Since he'll be taking the subway, he doesn't have to worry about traffic.

wtf is that? do you mean Revere Beach? that beach is shit and sucks. Glass in the sand etc.

Several years ago a friend of mine, his twin brother and I went to see "Enemy at the gates" in theaters. The sound was out for the first few minutes of the movie (During the Siege of Stalingrad) while everything under the sun is exploding or being shot. Naturally this caused us in the audience to add our own soundtrack. After several comments from the audience such as "check out my big phallic gun" my friend's brother pipes in with the winning line (right after a deserter gets shot by his own CO I believe)

"Welcome ta Reveya Beach!"

That comment brought down the house.

All that being said, its better than it used to be (not that hard I know) and the sandcastle building competition during the summer is actually worth checking out.

Yeah, I was gonna say - not too many people are gonna get that. I did.

You can also take the water taxi across. It's actually a pretty cool ride across. Goes right into the city. Costs $ 15.00 I think but it will bring you right over to the financial district which is a hop skip and a jump from both Fanuel Hall and the Aquarium...
