Just tried my old Windows shutdown from keyboard, and it is even better in Win 8. Alt+F4 brings up a box with SHUTDOWN selected. Then press enter. It is done.

Previous versions of Windows would shutdown with a succession of Alt+F4's. Win8 does it better!

Some keyboards have one-touch power off buttons. I've been using that since Vista/Win7.

That article makes the whole thing seem convoluted. Win-D (to get to the desktop) and then ALT-F4 is all of two operations.

I have to agree. Seriously? Buy a programmable keyboard or create a desktop shortcut with command switches to *shut down your computer*?

Or you could just hit Windows Key > Right Arrow > Enter in Win7...

That is essentially what I alluded to in the first response to this thread. My Win8 is always defaulted to Desktop. From there, Alt-F4, then Enter. Done! :)
