My two machines are networked using a 3COM 3C510 Home Ethernet Gateway. It works great and I can even share a dialup internet connection using an external modem connected to the gateway. Now, I got Cable internet (AT&T). I gave'em one of my machine's NIC address as MAC (Media Access Control). I have connected the Cable modem directly to that NIC. It is working fine too. My machines are no more in network. My question is that, is it possible to configure 3COM Ethernet Gateway, so that I can still network both my machines and share internet? Any idea how to proceed?

Thanks in advance....

Tricky, Tricky.

It's possible to make that one computer share it's connection using Microsofts Internet Connection Sharing (on Windows 2k, ME or XP). You would just need a second NIC in your connected PC that would plug into the rest of the network.

In order to make the Ethernet gateway work, I think you would have to alter its MAC address because I would bet your ISP is validating your connection via the MAC address.

That is possible to do on most hardware, but you have to make sure to change the MAC of your ethernet card first, because you can't have the same MAC on two pieces of hardware on the same network. Just pick a random MAC similar to the one you have.

As for the details on how to do this?? ooooo that's best left up to the manufacturer of the hardware. Talk to 3com about ur gateway (I'd bet you could change at least one MAC in it) and I would check with your LAN card's docs to see how to change the MAC.

That's just a suggestion and I'm not 100% sure it would work, but it *should*

That should be possible. That's how I'm working at home. I'm sharing a cable connection, but I'm also networked to the other computer. I can't see the other computer in My Network Places, but if you search for computers, and put in the other computer's name, it should come up. I just created a shortcut to the other computer...hehe. Good luck on your problem.
