How to share files on a LAN

It's weird,

At home, all I had to do was right click a folder and share it. And that folder would show up on my sisters and my gf's compters.

I've tried doing this at my friends house, and the other pc's on the network arent showing the folder we tried to share on his PC. All the PC's on his network have their firewalls disabled.

How do I properly set up the PC's to share files?

To make things easier put all the computers in the same workgroup name.

tbh, workgroup doesn't have much to do with it. i would suggest ignoring crapwork neighborhood and using unc paths (\\servername\share) and make sure NTFS permisssion and share permissions are working.
