Hi there

I have 3 seperate labs labs.
1st lab : 1 win2k server, 20 Xp machines
2nd lab : 1 win2k server, 20 Xp machines
2nd lab : 1 win2k server, 20 win2k prof machines

Everytime a new windows patch comes up I am going to each lab and installing the patches on every single machine. I have heard there is a way to install the patches through server. Its called SUS provided by Microsoft. Just came to know about it yesterday. But I am given the deadline to finish the job by my boss in 3 days. So I seek help with anyone who has done this before. Meanwhile I'll be reading the whitepapers provided for SUS.

It would be great if someone can give me info/link about the files that will be needing to deploy this process.
Do I ned to do something special?

Thanks

FYI...my uncle is a netadmin at a hospital with over 2000+ workstations, and a buttload of servers. He's been there for 6 years, and although I'm no network guy, i'm his only computer outlet in the family.....and if that Sus is the server that manages updates for you.....his official opinion is that it's crap, unreliable and not worth the effort. Of course, his manual patching was all scripted so maybe that is why he didn't like SUS......

But in general, he's pretty reliable when rating m$ft packages and releases since they're on the million-dollar-a-year+ licensing and they get everything VERY early. I still can't get over him loving Office XP.......but other then that, he's been a good 'what do you think of this' type person.

I use SUS to manage about 70 desktops and thier patching. It works perfectly here and I am free'd up alot of my time. I think it's a godsend. It is worthwhile to note that the product is free as well.

Make sure you download the most up to date version of the software. It is at SP 1 right now.

SUS is easy, I use it at home and haven't had any problems. A friend has even somehow managed to install it on a DC. I think he did it prior to DCPROMO and it stayed working.

The above link should point you in the right direction.

I've set it up but I'm not sure if it's actually working.

I have a home network that I've setup a domain on and I put sus on my DC (my other member server is already doing alot of other stuff) anyway it doesn't appear that my clients are actually updating from my server. What are some things that I might not have done? How can I tell if my systems are updating?

I would like to use this tool and it appears that I installed it correctly however when I went to install the client files it gave me an error message saying it was only ment to be installed on windows 2000. I get the same error on both my win2k box and my XP pro box.

Here is my setup;

win2k sever w/sp3 x2
win2k w/sp3
winXP pro w/sp1

It isn't supposted to be on a DC, at least an AD DC, my friend got away with it but I couldn't. Set a domain GPO for when and where the user work stations get the policies.

The newsgroups have better information on this then I do. :(

LOL, reformat C:\... You shouldn't have even been able to install it on an AD DC. I tried about 15 minutes ago and it wouldn't let me. I do not know about NT Server though, you might be able to run it on a PDC/BDC

Really? I had no problems at all installing it. Was it a permission issue? Since it's my domain I have complete rights and had no problem installing it, hell I even configured it.

It's the clients I'm having problems with.

Unfortunately formating my domain controller is not an option;)

In his defense I also really like Office XP. Not because I think it's any better than 2000, and definetly not because I enjoy the bloat.

I like Office XP because our end-users have an easier time with it (read more user friendly) which means less users wasting my department's time.

The link above was all I used to install SUS. You need IIS from the Windows disk and the newest SUS package from MS.

Are you having a certain problem or error?

Thanks for understanding my situation.
My problem:--
I have installed the SUS server. I am trying to install updates from my local SUS server.
But I want to use the push method to install upadates on the client. (Don't want the clients to pull the updates)
So do I just need to make a Group policy?
I read it will install the updates only when machines restart.
How to do it as soon as local SUS server downloads the updates?
Do I need SMS server for that?

How can I accomplish that?

Thanks
