I have a Dell 1550 in a 24U rack sitting in my basement and would like to set it up to run something small like Freeproxy. To "host windows updates" so I don't have to connect a bunch a computer at once to the internet to get updates.

Any recommendations?

I'm running Server 2003 Enterprise Ed. (It came with the disk, COA) WSUS seems a little bloated for something that should be really simple.

Since you mentioned setting up a proxy server, there is an add-in mod for Smoothwall (a linux based firewall) that will do this. The "stock" version will actually cache updates for Microsoft, Adobe, Apple, and nine popular anti-virus products. You can add your own rules to cache updates for other products as well.

Info on the mod is here.
