how to setup raid?

I just recieved my board.. Intel SE7230NH1LX.. unfortunately my case did not arrive today so I will hold off on setting up my box.

I'm looking to setup raid 1 (mirroring) to run my OS. I think I understand how to do it but correct me if i'm wrong.

I'll have to go into the bios and initialize the raid. Once the raid has been created I can proceed to install Win XP. While installing XP I'll probably need to hit F6 to install the driver for the raid controller that is on the mother board. Once this is done I should be able to select the volume and installed XP.

I have 2 seagate 7200.10 drives. Do I need to download the seagate software to setup anything on the drive? that is the only part I'm unsure of at this point. I dont think this board supports NCQ so I will not have to turn that on. I would be greatful for any other help/hints/tips as this is my first raid. I've done some homework and I think I understand the process but want to check one last time before my install takes place tomorrow.

thanks!

1) connect the hdd's
2) go into your motherboard bios <F2> and enable raid - set boot sequence to cdrom first, then raid/scsi next
3) reboot the computer and hit the proper key to boot into the raid bios <ctrl + e) and create the raid 1 array Intel® Embedded Server RAID Technology - User's Guide
4) save changes and reboot to XP CD, hit F6 at the beginning and insert the raid floppy when prompted

* fixed the link

Thank you for the link. I've already read through it. I just wanted to make sure i understood it.

Does anyone know if you can hotswap with this controller? Or if a drive fails in raid1 I have to shut down to swap the drive?

okay I got all my stuff. I'm trying to install windows and its not picking up the driver. I copied the driver from the cd onto a floppy and it says "insert manufacturer-supplied hardware support disk"

what am i doing wrong?

Are you sure it copied the correct files? There should be a TXTSETUP.OEM plus other files in the root.

yup I copied that file onto the disk as well. I opened that file with notepad and noticed the directory structure it calls out is different than what is listed on the cd. Will renaming the directories to match the call out in that file fix it?

Open the TxtSetup.oem and look under [Disks] for the path to the folders that should be on the floppy

[Config.MEGAIDE]
value = "Parameters\PnpInterface",5, REG_DWORD,1

Right now in the drivers folder there is a win64 and windows folder. 3 files; a read me, MegaIDE and TXTSETUP.oem

I'm not sure what the MegaIDE is because when I open it up all it says in notepad is MEGAIDE inside.

so I've got a blank floppy. Do i create a folder named MEGAide and them put the windows and win64 in there with txtsetup.oem in the root?

I've never had such problems installing a HD controller

That is what I would do. According to your TxtSetup.oem you sould not have a drivers folder, but you should have a single MEGAIDE folder with files and folders inside.

yup.. that is what i did.

also i guess have a good floppy drive would help. Time to return this drive to the store.. guess my new drive was DOA.

Thanks again for your time. The install is ticking along smoothly now.
