Hi all,

Obviously I'm new to DSL. Only used cable in the past and I can plug in any cable modem, called comcast to authorize it and I'm good to go.
Now that I switched to DSL with CenturyLink. They gave me Actiontec A1000 modem/router for $5.95/month. I have a Netgear DGN1000 that I bought for $20. I want to use it but CenturyLink told me that it's a adsl modem and theirs is vdsl so it won't work. I don't believe them but I can't setup the Netgear. Any help would be appreciated.

If CenturyLink said that the router isn't compatible with their network, then it's probably not compatible with their network..

well, i think they're forcing me to pay the rent or buying it. with comcast you can buy a modem off the shelf in the store and use without any problem.

Yes, as long as it is compatible with the Comcast system. Not all modems are.

I just did a quick Google search and found quite a few results from people saying that the Netgear DGN1000 doesn't work with CenturyLink.

Example from - http://reviews.bestbuy.com/3545/974...ess-router-with-dsl-modem-reviews/reviews.htm

"After hours with Netgear customer service, paying $16 to have a replacement product sent to me, (replacement did not work any better) Netgear told me to return the product to Best Buy and exchange it for DGN2200. DGN1000 connects to the internet but navigation is slow with frequent "IE cannot display page" messages. It just does not work with CenturyLink.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend".

Yet another example to the reason that we are "pontificating" Not to buy Combos.
