How to setup a web site

I was wondering how you set you domain name for your site instead of having to use your ip.?? Could anyone help me with this?
Thanks a lot

You have to purchase a domain name and then purchase hosting....Then you point the domain name to the IP address of the server the hosting company is "giving" you. If you go to the hot deals section, there is a post on 3 free years of hosting. So you'd have to buy a domain....from somewhere like, domainzero.com - but thats just the first thing that comes to mind - you could go to a myriad of places to purchase a domain name.

is there any way to just host a small site from my house??
if i bought a domain would i then point it to my ip. i put in my ip and it goes to site i host so how would i "attach" the domain?

the site

If http://24.118.236.9/ this is your static IP.

Buy a domain and point the DNS in the domain console (given to you by the domain vendor) to this IP.

If the above number is not static (i.e. it changes over time).
There are special services that can Route the traffic to your connection. It is called DNS Service, and some of them are Free.

Example: http://zonedit.com

the person who you buy the domain from dosent give you dns servers. you need your own that point the domain to the ip. usually the person your buying your server space & ip's from has the dns servers. you do set them at the place of domain purchase tho.

This is not true a lot of the small Domain Vendors will give you the access to set the DNS in order get your business.

You could also use a free ip forwarding service. I use www.no-ip.com to forward my website. There is a small pop-up that will show when you first load my website, but it's not that bad. There are a lot more free services like this out there. Do a google on website redirect or ip forwarding and you should find some of them.

i had the same question...

is there some site or tutorial that walks you through all the steps in a logical fashion??

not that people's answers aren't helpful, but it's difficult to sort all the information in this presentation.

Here is a list of most free (and for pay) DNS Services.

Link to: DNS Services.

The important aspect of the table are the the first two columns.

Col. 1 - Sub Domain means that you do not have to buy any Domain. Your Domain becomes a sub domain of the service

As an Example: If you subscribe to myip.us as jack your Internet address would be jack.myip.us.

Col. 2 - Custom Domain includes free services that require you to buy a Domain first, cost about $10-$15 a year. They will provide the redirection Internet service but your address will be your domain. I.e. you bought the Domain jack.com that will be your Internet address.

Host forwarding from Dyndns.org is free on a variety of prenamed domains (like homedns.org)... This works for both static and dynamic allocated IP's (an updater service to keep tabs on your WAN address)

You only start paying when you want them to host your own domain names.

I use both services from them; the free webhops and also custom dns for a client's site. They provide a great dns service, with easy to use configuration.

Just as a precaution: Make sure you're not violating your service agreement by hosting a server on your own machine. Kinda surprised nobody else has said it yet.

I usually do, but I'm slipping, I guess.😛

SkyKing. you are slipping just a little.

Me too. 😱 😱 😱

While usually other issues (like sharing your bandwidth with other house holds) might have legal ramifications beyond TOS.

Running a server for picking up few working files while you are on the road is not an issue that the ISP cares about.

On the other hand Sharing Your Brittany Files with others, is very BAD.
