How to setup a profitable website?

I'm thinking of making my own website for profit. I don't have much money to start out with. I was wondering how much money did it take to setup a website like Anandtech from the beginning? Do you operate your own server machines or do you rent? How much revenue do you get from advertisements.

1) Create a social online community.

2) Use (google) ads

3) profit.

4) I'm actually serious here. It's been my experience as a web developer that many folks make a fortune that route

True but getting the people to come to it is the hard part.

As long as you have something about your social online community which is attractive, people WILL come.

You advertise on news sites and people come. Folks who are interest in what you have to provide become members and so on.

I'm in the process of building one actually. It will be beneficial for many folks and I have many ideas and plans for endless potential and possibilities.

It also helps that I know exactly how to code what I want.

I've encountered pretty college girls who made some profit from their websites. ;-) I think they mentioned posting their modeling pics.

People will pay fo something they want. The key is that many do not know wha they want and flock wit ha crowd of pigeons.

If you can't effectively tell them what they want and deliver on that, sorry my friend, but you will not make any money....

That I don't know yet.

But depending how much traffic you get, you could potentially get 4-8 grand a month
Not trying to sound rude, but you can "potentially" get whatever amount you can write on a piece of paper. If you write 2 cents, or 1 million dollars, n the case of Youtube - much more, it's all possible.

Setting up a website with the goal of turning a profit should be treated just like any other business. If you think it's easier to create a website and make money than it is to go to some place and open up a Mom and Pop shop of some kind, a gas station, whatever, you're probably wrong. At some point, both owners will see that there will be a lot of effort required. Obviously, both have different levels of feasible automation and other similar factors, but if you're getting into it because you think it's easy, step away from the keyboard and think again, or try it, and you'll realize it soon enough.

Some people say that the web hosting market is very saturated, and while it is, there is a way to be successful. I'd say that trying to start a website is saturated as well because unless you can answer why someone should choose your website over another, or your website at all, your's will just be another one of the millions of sites and probably "dust in the wind."

Any kind of business venture requires planning, effort, an investment (no matter how small or big, requires something, not always in the form of money either!), and someone to make it happen. It's definitely possible to make a profitable website, but you have to really plan it out and can't just expect to purchase erwin1978.com, toss up a forum, and expect people to flood in discussing every topic you can think of and create a forum for.

Very good point. You have to be able to define what people want and what you will provide, if you can't, you're doomed.

If you are interested and serious, drop me a PM, but it's not something you can expect to spend $20 on for a domain and hosting, and hope to make a thousand dollars by the time you wake up. It takes serious effort and in a long term form, just like any other business. Even besides the OP - if anyone ever wants help or guidance with it, drop me a PM, I'm probably not the most accomplished of individuals, but I've been in the industry creating websites for profit of some sort of the other since 98.

I am happy to provide guidance, advice, tips, etc. to anyone out there. Hop onto Skype and RossMAN might even be willing to share his 2 cents, he has a lot of experience as well 🙂

Make something people want, then profit from Google ads.

Figure out a way to get people to visit and browse around your site. The bad guys do this by sending you spam and infecting your machine with malware. The good guys do this by creating content that people want to view (I say view because not all desirable content is "read"able: hint hint 😛)

Well..I did have one viable website business...annual income was something like ~2000 a year not counting expenses.

I basically just made content, added some SEO work and joined some affiliate networks.

You need to offer a service or product.

The mom and pop internet shops that marked up on-order product ended awhile ago.

Step 1: find a product or service which people need/want

Step 2: Sell said product or service on a web site

Step 3: Profit

I recently decided to do that exact thing. I got my domain (find a niche), opened up a corporation, got business bank/credit cards, and contacted some suppliers. Built a cute little site using zen cart and customized it, took care of all the hosting stuff, took care of all the company stuff. Just need to get products online and i'm ready to go. it's actually a fun little project. biggest expense was forming the company (don't ever waste money on a company to do it for you like i did), and buying quickbooks pro 🙂 fortunately best buy had a sale for $149.99. It does take some time and effort to do something but it's fairly rewarding without too much cost to start. figured it's worth a shot.
