ok so i take it the modem/router i have is no good. I need a wireless modem/router. mybe i am getting confuse with the whole wireless and wi-fi thing. it's really my uncles laptop. basicly he wants to seach the net from anyone in his house. so would be wi-fi or going wireless.

so confused.

Wireless, WIFI, in this context it is the same.

If the current Modem/Router is Not Wireless (WIFI) you need to buy a Wireless cable/DSL Router.

It should be connected to the Router and configured like this.

Using a Wireless Router as a switch with an Access Point - http://www.ezlan.net/router_AP.html

If you deem it too hard to learn (or you do not have the patience for it) hire someone to do it.

What's the exact model number of the modem/router?

And the laptop? Is it running XP or Vista?

MAdwand1 ---- got it from BEST BUY. the name is 2wire modem/router model # 2701HG-B

Intel® Celeron® processor 585; 2GB DDR2 memory; DL DVD±RW/CD-RW drive; 15.6" widescreen; 160GB hard drive; Windows Vista Home Basic with SP1

The 2wire has wireless built-in. There's no need to get a separate wireless router to start. Keep it simple to start -- work with what you have.

Connect to the 2wire with a wired LAN connection, set up the wireless -- enable SSID broadcast, and keep the security disabled (open). Then set up the laptop, and then confirm that you are able to access the Internet wirelessly.

Once that's done, connect with a wire again, and secure the wireless with WPA with a long randomized key. E.g. from here: https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm

Save the key to a text file, and save the file on your laptop. Then change the laptop's security to use WPA and copy that key from the file and paste it in. Save and confirm connection.

Here's the full manual: http://support.2wire.com/index.php?page=download

If the modem was set up by your ISP, you might have to call them for some information (e.g. the password) or help.
