how to set up server

I want to set up a server on an old computer running windows 2k. I then want to have a phpbb forum running from that server. Any help you can provide on how to do this would be great. thanks.

www.apache.org has a good (free) web server, www.php.net has php and I think http://www.mysql.com/ has mysql. Install instructions can probably be found at those sites.

To Run a Full Size Forum it is not so simple.

Number of People, Expected Traffic, yes/no Graphic, DB to use, etc. are all important variables. A simple set of choices can create a day or night difference in the type of Server and software that you need to Run.

So you need to start with Defining more precise (to yourself) what do you really need in a Forum, and go from there.

Search the Internet for Forum Software, Forum Support, and see what it is entailed; otherwise you will have unpleasent surprises in the middle of the project.
